DALMATIAN: KNOW ALL ABOUT THE BREED

Maybe your first contact with a Dalmatian was through movies, like “101 Dalmatians”, or others that present these dogs as good companions for firefighters, right?
Although the breed is not so common, the truth is that these dogs are good companions and have a lot of resistance and energy.
In this post, we will talk a little more about the breed, its characteristics and curiosities. Want to stay on top of it? Then read on.

THE ORIGIN OF THE DALMATIAN BREED

There is no confirmation of where and when this breed appeared, but the most accepted theory at the moment is that it appeared in Dalmatia, Croatia. From this comes the name of the dogs.
It is believed that the breed is much older than we think, because there are paintings that refer to an image of dogs with the same characteristics as the Dalmatian.

PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIORAL CHARACTERISTICS

Dalmatians are mostly known for their black spots, but their physical characteristics go far beyond that.
Find out below some particularities of this animal.

PHYSICAL RESISTANCE

These dogs have a lot of stamina and energy. Because they are strong dogs, it is important to maintain a physical exercise routine. They were even used as hunting dogs in the old days.

WEIGHT AND SIZE

They are large dogs with a height of approximately 58 cm for males and 55 cm for females. The average weight of the animals is around 25 to 30 kg.

COAT

Dalmatians have a smooth, short, shiny, white coat with black or tan markings.

PERFORMANCE AND BEHAVIOR

Dalmatians are calm, but they have a lot of energy. They show peace of mind with the tutor and known people and can be aggressive with strangers, which makes them excellent guard dogs.
They are companions and always like to be around the owner. When left alone for a long time, they often feel sadness and discouragement. That way, if you think about having a Dalmatian, pay attention to this characteristic mentioned. Perhaps, this is not the best breed if you need to stay out all day.

LIFE EXPECTANCY

It is estimated that a dog of this breed that is well cared for can live between 10 and 13 years of age, so it is important to take good care of it to ensure a better life.

COMMON DISEASES IN DALMATIANS

This breed of dog often develops some genetic problems, such as deafness , kidney stones and hip dysplasia. These are diseases that worry the tutor.
In the case of deafness, there are two cases:
  • unilateral : affects only one ear and the animal manages to live normally; and
  • bilateral : affects both ears, which is already worrying. That way, you have to be very patient with the pet.

TIPS FOR TAKING GOOD CARE OF YOUR PET

It is essential to take care of our puppy on a daily basis, below we will show you some precautions that you must constantly take.

HYGIENE

Generally, Dalmatians are not dirty and do not even show a bad smell, so the recommendation is to give them, on average, a bath per week or every 15 days. Regarding brushing the fur, it is advised to brush it at least twice a week to prevent it from falling around the house.
Good hygiene is essential to prevent disease. Teeth, for example, should be brushed twice a week. At least once a month, nails should be cut.
The ears need special care. To clean the outside, you can use a damp cotton pad, but beware! Do not clean the ear canal part, as inserting objects in this region can cause inflammation.

DIET

As we know, the life expectancy of the animal can vary according to its physical and mental health. Therefore, it is essential that the Dalmatian has a good diet.
It is recommended that large dogs eat two to three times a day and have water available at all times.
It is advised that the food for puppies is different from the food for adults, because for each stage of the dog’s life there is a different amount of nutrients present in the food. If possible, also buy the product according to the breed.

PHYSICAL EXERCISES

As they are active dogs, they need to spend their energy on a daily basis, so playing and walking frequently with the pet is a great option to exercise both the dog and the tutor. Not to mention that this is a way to spend more time with your friend.

TRAINING

Dalmatians, like other breeds, also need proper training. There are some basic principles that can be taught to the animal at home since it was a puppy: sit, paw, lay down, roll over, do the needs in the right place, among others.
To help with training, the tutor can use rewards whenever the dog does something right, such as treats, toys and affection.
It is essential to remember that the pet is in the learning phase, so it should not be punished for doing something wrong.

VET

It’s always good to remember that taking the dog frequently to the vet, at least twice a year, is essential to maintain its health. Thus, you can learn more about the breed and clear all your doubts directly with an expert.
